Watching: Farewell, Etaoin Shrdlu

There's a ton unpack in this video. I recommend finding a comfortable spot to sit, relax, and watch the entire piece. Just let it all soak in.

The end of an era.
It was good while it lasted.
Crying won't help.

My favorite bit (13:39 in) is listening to a worker that's been in the printing industry for 26 years, and hearing him talk about the move to computers.

"I hate to see it. It's inevitable that we're going to go into computers. All the knowledge I've acquired over these 26 years, is all locked up in a little box now called a computer. And I think probably most jobs are going to end up the same way." "Do you think computers are a good idea in general?" "Oh there's no doubt about it, they're going to benefit everybody eventually. How long it will take I don't know."

While sad that something familiar and proven has given way to modern technology, it's very wise to see the inevitability of it.

Life on the Bering Sea is one of the most treacherous and rewarding ways to make a living. For Captain Sean Dwyer, the youngest captain in the region, it's all he knows-after learning the ropes, he took over the family-run fishing business from his father at an early age.

Sure, the goal is obviously to sell some XTRATUF boots but don’t see this as purely a product marketing video. Even though it is one of the best product videos I’ve seen in a long time. It’s also a great story about the relationship between a father and a son and the passing down of skills and knowledge in a tough environment and even tougher circumstances.

Sidenote: While I’ve watched a few episodes of Deadliest Catch in the past, I’m not familiar with this Captain, but if Discovery Channel filmed their show more like the style of this video, I’d be onboard for sure. Well done Huckberry.

"Selection is meant to honor our roots, to span the generations of Special Forces, to demand these kinds of standards of a human being, and to never compromise.”

This video is top quality. Not just well produced and edited, it provides a unique view at both sides (Cadre and participant) of a GORUCK event. Not just any GORUCK event, mind you, but THE toughest endurance event in the world.

"To me, the canoe is the greatest invention of humankind. It's just wonderful. It's personification of bushcraft. When you float on water, because somebody worked out how to use natural resources and make a boat out of it. And it's physical, it's demanding, it's tough, it's a hard way of traveling. [...] It makes something of you. It's an honest way of traveling."

Snow, sweat, testosterone and the sound of chainsaws.
